I discovered yoga in my thirties as a stressed out researcher experiencing panic attacks. Yoga gave me back my life and so much more. A decade after being introduced to yoga, I found myself teaching it to a lively community of incarcerated women, several of whom told me that they too suffered from panic attacks. It was such a wonderful, rich experience to introduce yoga to these women and to witness them realise a sense of ease and pleasure in their bodies; I shall forever remain grateful for it. Teaching in this environment also helped me; as a new immigrant struggling to find a ‘home’ in my new country I found a fellowship in the prison community that I badly needed. Like me, those inside were living in a strange environment far from home. I learnt much about the human capacity for courage, resilience and the ability to change.
Through prison teaching, I discovered a love for lively, spontaneous classes and that experience encouraged me to try teaching yoga to children. It was then but a short hop, skip and jump to discovering Circus Yoga … where I found a whole new way to play and be!
I am in awe of the journey that yoga has taken me on; I never set out to be a yoga teacher but I am so grateful for it’s presence in my life. Yoga, meditation and Jungian analysis have taught me that all experiences bring something useful to our lives and that we learn the wisest things from our woundedness and, therein, lies the source of our own healing. I love witnessing people’s experiences of self discovery and I try in my classes to hold a space in which people of all ages can explore, play and discover themselves. It is a wonderful journey and I continue to learn and grow from those around me – whether they be big or small!
