More than 10 years ago, I stumbled into a yoga studio in Cambridge, Mass. I came out channeling someone foreign—I think it was myself. I was different, from the way my legs moved to the way my heart felt. I had never moved like that before. Five years later, I stumbled into an Oregon elementary school classroom to teach writing and came out feeling the same way. I had never talked and connected like that before.
For many years, I was the editor of an outdoor magazine on the east coast. I followed my heart out to Oregon several years ago and now freelance for various clients, newspapers and magazines—and teach whenever and wherever I can. And to whomever I can! I lead a memoir class for senior citizens every Tuesday afternoon, coach writers on the phone, and help run a daily after-school program for elementary kids. Whether teaching movement or writing, helping a kid understand math or flying an adult, I believe it is comes down to finding the way in. And everyone I encounter is a little different. Some people need to show themselves to the world; some need to show themselves to themselves.
I am so grateful to have a life in which I can express myself and encourage others do the same. I have learned that I’m doing the same thing whether I’m teaching or practicing, doing writing or yoga. Simply uncovering that sometimes-enormous, sometimes-microscopic voice that says “I am.”
