I started going to a yoga class as a college freshman. My teacher looked to be 50 and later revealed that she was about to have her 70th birthday. I was hooked. I loved her, the way she explained the poses, her gentle specificity about how to twist and move and bend our bodies. I can still hear her voice and see her yoga stick figure drawings in my mind. That was in 1996. Years later I thought hard about what to do next with my life. I traveled to India to work in a school in Himachal Pradesh and see if my next step might include teaching kids something. It did, although I think the reality of the situation is that my 6 and 7 year old students teach me each day!
CircusYoga reminds me of what happens when you mix yoga class with summer camp. These are two of the places I’ve felt safest, most at home and myself, and had the most fun of my life. I have loved the way my Yoga for Kids classes have changed since my training. My summer co-teacher Amy and I think that scarves are magic! Something just happens to everyone in the room when the scarves come out!
As a child one of my favorite books was Miss Rumphius, by Barbara Cooney. In this book young Alice is told by her grandfather that although she can travel the world and see far off places, and live by the ocean, the most important thing she must do is find a way to make the world a more beautiful place. Yoga is one way to do that. CircusYoga is one really fun way to do that.
